Liberty Indwe Park – built over the last two years, is a 4-hectare garden, situated directly opposite Wits University, and encompasses the precinct of Liberty's own headquarters and a building that once housed South African Breweries. Indwe, derived from isiXhosa and isiZulu, is the name for the blue crane, our national bird. The Park is an intended landmark in Braamfontein, and there fore a national legacy.
"We wanted to develop a space that created a green lung in the city that adds meaning and provides fulfilment of use to the area. It's a place where employees, clients of Liberty and people in the surrounds can connect with nature," says Thiru Pillay, Liberty Group Executive.
The park ties in with the City of Johannesburg's drive to make itself more ecologically friendly, which includes widespread tree planting, rejuvenating parks and public participation programmes. "The Park is an opportunity to create a space where Liberty can serve the people of the organisation, as well as connect with the city and the broader Braamfontein community," says Amelia Beattie, the CEO of Liberty Two Degrees.
