cckpt satellite • sound art • data sonification at contra.joburg 2024

A programme by Georg Dietzler gerngesehen.de / Cologne, Germany, played throughout the day on the Contra.Joburg bus shuttles.

artists presented in a 7 hour long cockpit compilation are:

Michael Allen Z Prime/Ireland solo and with Susana Lopez/Spain

Collins + Goto Studio/Scotland

Sabina Hyoju Ahn/Korea/USA

Marta Zapparoli/Italy/Germany

Julian Rohrhuber/Germany

Mushrooms, auroras or bacteria – in the sound art exhibition cckpt (aka cockpit), the inaudible becomes audible. In installations and performances with specially developed instruments for the sonification of data, usually developed over years of collaboration with scientists, electromagnetic radiation is transformed into „bioelectrical sounds and music“. Data from weather satellites, data from outer space, imploding stars, borealis and even bioelectric impulses from trees or the human body are all sources for compositions or real-time conversions into sound. The installations and performances specially commissioned for cckpt are sometimes conceptual, sometimes poetic, but always at the interface between art and science. With a multitude of electronic and computer-controlled instruments, like in a cockpit.

Michael Allen Z Prime/Ireland is one of the pioneering artists in this field of bioelectrical music by fungi, bacteria and plants. - Collins + Goto Studio Glasgow are focussing on sonification of leaves translated into synthetic Japanese Gagaku music or designed an indoor plant synthesiser recordings were released for the vinyl PLAIN AIR. - Korean Sabina Hyoju Ahn is working with body bacteria and own body electricity for generating audio visual performances and installations. Italian Marta Zapparoli has an ongoing sound art project on Northern Lights/Borealis of Norway. Julian Rohrhuber is using astronomic data for an algorithmic composition - you're listening to a stereo recording of a 16.1 loudspeaker installation.
